What are mechanical couplings?
When we talk about industrial machinery, we must undoubtedly know about its uses, its applications, and the different solutions it provides us. However, there are numerous elements that we are not so accustomed to and that can make a difference in our industrial processes. We are talking aboutmechanical couplings,whichare theelementsofmachineryintendedtoextend shaft transmission lines, or to connect different sections of axes, either in different planes or with parallel directions, in order to transmit energy.
Mechanical couplingsarepresent in modern and advanced processes, in which, in addition to the functions described,they also fulfill other objectives, such as protecting your system from excessive loads and forces. That said, we must bear in mind that mechanical couplings have a fairly recent use in industry, dating back to the nineteenth century, although they currently have a wide variety of applications.
Among the multiple functions thatmechanical couplings can have,wemust emphasize that theirmain function is to connect shafts that have been manufactured separatelyandthat need to rotate, as may be the case with a motor or a generator.
In addition to this, we must also highlight other functions of thecouplings,since, in the same way, they also allow a final movement to achieve greater flexibility, in addition to providing a better disconnection of the two independent devices,incases where it is required to carry out some type of repair or subsequent modification.

Different coupling options
Among the different options available in terms ofcouplings, we find three large groups: rigid couplings,flexible couplings,andarticulated couplings.
Rigidcouplings, as the name suggests, are all those couplings thatprovideus with a type of fixed connection between two axes, in addition to offering us high precision and power torque. However, we must emphasize that, with this type of couplings, we will not achieve the ability to absorb misalignments, since, being rigid, it does not allow movements between both axes.
Rigidcouplingsarealso unable to absorb vibrations and, in addition, usually require frequent lubrication. This is because both axes of union must be aligned correctly, to ensure in this way that we get the best performance, at the same time that we will be preventing future breakages. Finally, we must emphasize that, within the rigidcouplings, we find the subgroupsofsleeve couplings, rigid plate couplings,andsplit sleevecouplings.
Another type of coupling we find are flexible couplings,and within them, there aremetallicelastic couplings or thosecouplings with an elastic element. The first, metal elastic couplings, are those that have a type of power transmission, which is carried out by, as the name suggests, metal components. On the contrary, inflexible couplings with a plastic element, the transmission is carried out by some flexible type component.
In this case, bothelastic couplingswillhelp us compensate for misalignments, being especially useful in applications where we need a quick start of the machinery.
Originally,elastic couplingshavea lower power torque than rigid couplings, although this can be solved thanks to the wide variety of alternatives that we can find, depending on the type of flexible coupling we use.
Finally, we must talk about articulatedcouplings, which are all those whose main function is to prevent the loss of power transmission, by joining two axes that have different alignments.

- Trasco ES coupling,whichhas been specifically designed to compensate for misalignment and to dampen vibrations in indexing applications. It has a compact design, making it completely optimal for those applications that require precise movement.
- Servoplus Bellows coupling, which is ideal for those servo motor applications in which high torsional rigidity is needed, in addition to zero backlash, high torques, low inertia, always with the highest reliability.
- Servomate coupling,acoupling specially designed for servo motor applications. It also has a compact design, which will provide us with low inertia, achieving a reliable coupling perfect for high speeds.
- Safemax torque limiter couplings, specially designed for industrial applications, where there is an increase in automation, in which greater robustness of the systems is required. With Safemax couplings, we will avoid instant decouplings, eliminating unnecessary risks.
- Metaldrive disc couplings, which are those made of steel, and which are usually used in those applications in which we need greater reliability and precision, always accompanied by minimal maintenance.
- Sitex ST couplings, which are couplings made of high-quality steel, composed of one or two toothed hubs.
- Trasco couplings, which are flexible and homokinetic, will ensure the best performance in their class.
- Sitex couplings, those formed by two toothed steel cubes, which are connected by a toothed crown made from a polyamide resin.
- Juboflex elastic couplings, couplings manufactured with an elastic element of natural rubber, which has steel inserts for the assembly of fixing screws.
- Sheet couplings,whichare those manufactured in two halves connected with bolts. These couplings do not require maintenance or lubrication, and thanks to their construction, they also prevent corrosion.
- Bolt couplings are rigid couplings manufactured in two cast iron halves connected by bolts.
- Universal joints, high precision, whose executions are composed of 2 hubs with forks and a central block.
